log / 5 steps of team development

  1. Forming: This is the initial stage of team development where team members are brought together. At this stage, team members are introduced to each other and their roles are defined. They also learn about the objectives and mission of the team. There may be some anxiety and uncertainty as members are not yet familiar with each other or the tasks at hand.

  2. Storming: This is a more challenging phase where individual personalities begin to emerge, potentially leading to conflicts and disagreements within the team. Members may challenge authority, rules, and each other’s ideas. It’s a critical stage where teams learn to manage conflicts effectively for better collaboration.

  3. Norming: At this stage, team members start to resolve their differences, appreciate colleagues’ strengths, and respect your authority as a leader. They feel part of the team and realize that they can achieve work if they accept other viewpoints.

  4. Performing: The team reaches a point where they are functioning efficiently towards accomplishing their goals with minimal supervision or interference due to their high level of autonomy. The focus is on over-achieving goals, and exceeding expectations while improving performance.

  5. Adjourning (or Mourning): In this final stage, after achieving their goals, the team may be disbanded as their mission has been accomplished. This can lead to feelings of uncertainty or sadness amongst some members who have developed close working relationships with others in the group.
